Person of the Year: Ray Wilkinson
Boy, competition was real tough this year for Reason and Liberty Central's Person of the Year Award. Take Ron Paul and his revolution — but it fizzled. Bob Barr — ditto.
Then there's Muntadhar al-Zaidi, that fearless pruner of the shrub. Alas, he wasn't fast enough for the ducker of just de(s)serts.
Also, I don't like al-Zaidi's motive. The shrub sure needs pruning, but for the right reasons, like for his religious fundamentalism, not for the only right thing he ever did, bringing Saddam to justice. What does al-Zaidi think — that there would have been fewer widows and orphans under Saddam?
So Reason and Liberty Central's Person of the Year Award 2008 goes to Ray Wilkinson, the lone resident of Surfside Beach, Texas, to defy the fascists' order to run from Hurricane Ike.
The most odious kind of fascism is that which adds insult to injury by not only raping you, but claiming it's "for your own good," "to save you from yourself." Accordingly, by standing up to that kind of shit, Wilkinson advanced the cause of liberty more than any other person I heard of this year.

Whatever Happened to Paul Janka?
Before I announce Reason and Liberty Central's Person of the Year 2008, let's take a look back at the Person of the Year 2007 — Paul Janka. Does he still live up to his title?
It's funny how prescient I was when I called him a capitalist of the dating scene. You see, he went on to hawk a commercial pick-up ebook. Either he innocently stumbled over the idea that his skills are marketable, or his TV circuit was just a premeditated publicity stunt for his book.
Anyways, what tricks might he have for sale? On the one hand, there are his past contributions to day game, which helped him win last year. On the other hand, he used to advise making chicks drunk. So, on the whole, I doubt whatever insights into the devious psyche of your average emotion-driven chick there are in his book are worth $39.95.
But no matter whether he does it for love or money, he got all those fundies', feminazis', and monoamorists' panties in one big knot. And that's why I love that dude — in a totally platonic way, of course. :P
PS. The price of his book seems to be down to $19.95 now. Guess Janka already skimmed all those desperate enough to pay twice as much?

"Mysterious Boat" Completes First Capitalist Trilogy
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"Mysterious Boat" Completes First Capitalist Trilogy
Raleigh, NC — December 18, 2008
"Mysterious Boat," the latest novel by Alexander Butziger, completes the first trilogy of Kevin Traynor mysteries, begun with "Torch in the Night" and followed by "Phantom Train." The first three volumes in the Kevin Traynor series may well be the first trilogy of capitalist mystery and adventure novels.
For far too long, adventure, mystery, and espionage fiction has been catering to populist prejudices, pitting government-sponsored heroes against evil capitalists. At a time when capitalism is once more being sniped at from the populist peanut gallery, the Kevin Traynor series shows that capitalism is the only path to tomorrow.
While the stories do not gloss over the darker sides of human nature and of capitalism, like pointy-haired bosses and greed-crazed CEOs, they also show how things could be and should be. In the process, they treat readers to a thrill ride of adventure, that is, in "Mysterious Boat," two thrill rides in two adventures:
"The Mystery of the Mysterious Boat"
Death from the fog? For decades, a ghostly boat has been haunting an old house in Malibu. Where others have failed, Kevin Traynor takes charge.
A sneaky star, an altruistic activist, a strange scientist — is one of them conjuring up the ghosts? From Venice and South Central to the Hollywood Hills runs the chase: Who is the cat, who the mouse? Fire, arrows, gunshot, and predators from another dimension: Wherever they go, Traynor and his friends are threatened by sinister stalkers. Finally, Traynor has to face the ghouls himself — and Traynor and company are on the menu!
Plus a bonus story:
"The Secret of the Lost Tribe"
Swallowed by the wilderness… Who in the world were the Anasazi? And whatever became of them? Kevin Traynor is bound to find out. Just follow the ghost riders through the badlands of New Mexico…

Economics 101 with Yaron Brook
The capitalist answer to all that populist sniping from left and right.

Some point to Alan Greenspan. But his hands-off approach to the economy originated with Ayn Rand.

"The Tennessee Waltz" (Bisexual Polyamorous Edition)
I was dancin' with my darlin' to the Tennessee Waltz
When an old friend I happened to see
I introduced her to my loved one
And while they were dancin'
My friend stole my sweetheart from me.
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
Now I know just how much I have won
Yes, I won another darlin' the night they were playing
The beautiful Tennessee Waltz.

Capitalism, Communism, and a Mixed Economy
What's the difference between capitalism, communism, and a mixed economy?
In capitalism, if a CEO like Roger Smith bets the company on a new technology and loses, losses are limited to the money invested by preexisting shareholders and creditors.
In communism, if a commissar bets the kolkhoz on a new type of whip and loses, every soviet citizen is on the hook for the losses until the next purge, when the commissar gets executed.
In a mixed economy, if a CEO like Roger Smith bets the company on a new technology and loses, every taxpayer is on the hook for the losses indefinitely.

Downsize Two Dinosaurs
A good idea, actually: "Merge the Big Three"
Just make sure that Ford takes over GM and Chrysler, not the other way round. The dinosaurs with the worst track records ought to be eliminated.

Carey Lowell Is Too Beautiful
"Was this the face that launched a thousand ships and burnt the topless towers of Ilium?" — Christopher Marlowe
Too beautiful to dock a ship, that is. To put into perspective my statement to the effect that only blondes are beautiful, consider Carey Lowell.
There's scientific evidence that though brunette, she is beautiful. As Pam Bouvier, the main Bond girl from the last real Bond movie, License to Kill, she crashes the WaveKrest into a dock. That proves that she lacks the ugliness of one millinegahelen required to dock a ship.
